Import Car from Japan to Tanzania

Japan is one of the most well-known countries that provides export-quality used cars to many countries of the globe. Among the other countries, Tanzania is one of them. Like other countries, if you want to import car from Japan to Tanzania, you will need to know some important information. 

In this article, I'm gonna be share the overall rules, regulations, and other information that will help you to import Japanese used cars to Tanzania. 

Why Import a Used Car From Japan to Tanzania?
When it comes to used cars, most people prefer Japanese cars. Both new and used cars are imported from Japan to Tanzania as well. The reason behind the hype of used cars are:

  • They are not that expensive,
  • Quality of their used cars is high,
  • The used cars of Japan are comparatively more durable,
  • They are reliable. 

As you can see, the used Japanese cars are a wise choice beside the expensive cars of showrooms. So, you can choose any type of used car that fits your needs. 

Inspection Required


It is mandatory to undergo an inspection process before importing cars from Japan to Tanzania. It is called JAAI (Japan Auto Appraisal Institute) Inspection. All the new and used Japanese cars that are going to be imported to Tanzania have to pass the JAAI road-worthiness Inspection. When the inspection is done, a certificate of JAAI will be provided, too.

JAAI is a non-profit organisation which is supervised by the Japanese Government. If you import a car (new or used) in Tanzania without the JAAI certificate, you will have to bear heavy penalties. 

 

Documents You will Need for Importation

Following documents you have to show while importing any used car from Japan:

  • Bill of Lading
  • Export Certificate
  • Proforma Invoice
  • JEVIC, QISJ
  • Agent’s Authorization Letter
  • Import permits from TFDA and TBS (Tanzania Bureau of Standards)
  • Taxation in TANZANIA

Importing Used Japanese Cars - Tanzania Regulations


There are some rules and regulations in Tanzania for used car importation. If you want to purchase a used Japanese car, you must follow the guidelines so that you can save both money and time. Here the regulations and information you need to know:

1.Shipping Ports:


The used cars are imported to the port of Dar-Es-Salaam. After that, they are imported to Tanzania. 

2.Vehicle Age Restrictions in Tanzania


Actually there is no restriction of age on imported Japanese used cars in Tanzania. But, there is a little condition– you will need to provide an additional cost if the used car is older than 8 years old. 
You can easily calculate the date of a car from the manufacturing date. If you want to import used cars more than 8 years old, you have to pay excise duty.

Charge for non utility vehicles: 25 percent
Charge for utility vehicles: 5 percent

This rule is applicable for light trucks and cars, but is not applicable for machinery. 

Importation of buses, vans, cars, trucks etc that are going to be used on the public roads in Tanzania, have to follow this rule. But, this rule is not applicable for machinery, cargo, agricultural equipment, grader, or bulldozer.

3.Taxation in TANZANIA


It is one of the common rules of many countries that if someone wants to import cars, he must pay a certain amount of import tax. The tax varies from the engine capacity. 

 

Vehicles of engine capacity up to 2000cc:

  • Import duty 25%
  • VAT 20%
  • Cumulatively, this is 50% of dutiable value.

Vehicles of engine capacity above 2000cc:

  • Import duty 25%
  • Excise duty 10%
  • VAT 20%
  • Cumulatively, this is 65% of dutiable value.

4.Cost of Importing a Car From Japan to Tanzania

The total vehicular import cost varies from different factors, such as the age of vehicle, engine capacity, etc.
Here is the details:

1.The cars with up to 2000cc engine capacity:

  • Value Added Tax (VAT) - 20%
  • Import Duty - 25%

2.The car with above 2000cc engine capacity:

  • Value Added Tax (VAT) - 20%
  • Import Duty - 25%
  • Excise Duty - 10%

Also, if the vehicle is older than 8 years, you will need to provide an excise duty, too, which is 25% for the non-utility and 5% for the utility vehicles. 

5.Excise Duty


Excise duty also varies depending on the capacity of the engine. The duty is applied on goods and services that are locally manufactured or imported. It depends on the basis of different cylinder capacity.

Vehicle Applicable Rate of different capacity:

  • Cylinder capacity not more than 1000cc- 0%
  • Cylinder capacity exceeding 1000cc but not exceeding 2000cc- 5%
  • Cylinder capacity exceeding 2000cc- 10%

It is easy to import used Japanese cars in Tanzania. Only you need to have a good knowledge of the import rules and regulations.
